What Is A Trixie Bet?

what is a trixie bet

Gamblers looking for a little variety in their lives are in luck – there are a ton of different ways to bet on sports. Some of these bets increase your chances of winning, but decrease your payout if you do. Others increase your payout, but lower your chances of winning.

The trixie bet, on the other hand, is a creature all its own – designed to attract bettors who want the best of both worlds.

Trixie bets, explained

A trixie bet is a kind of parlay (sometimes known as combo, multi, or accumulator) bet. They’re very popular in the horse racing world, but you can get them in the North American league sports world, too.

They’re similar to treble bets, in that they’re parlay bets placed on 3 betting lines. The similarities, however, end there.

Understanding parlay bets

To properly understand trixie bets, you need to first understand parlay bets. Parlays are bets placed on two or more independent lines – in order to win the parlay, you need to win each line you’re betting on. Let’s use an example from the NFL:

NFL Parlay Bet

Teams (selection in bold)Point spreadOdds
L.A Rams @ Seattle-3.5-110
Tampa Bay @ Washington-8-110

This is known as a double parlay – in order to win the bet, both Seattle and Tampa Bay would have to beat the spread.

If we were feeling particularly lucky – or better yet, like we had a very good edge on our games, we might opt for what’s known as a treble parlay – a parlay bet on three lines.

NFL Treble Bet

Teams (selection in bold)Point spreadOdds
L.A Rams @ Seattle-3.5-110
Tampa Bay @ Washington-8-110
Baltimore @ Tennessee-3.5-110

In this circumstance, all three of our teams would need to beat the spread in order for our treble bet to pay off.

4 bets, 3 lines, 1 slip

With all of that out of the way, we can finally get into trixie bets. A trixie bet isn’t actually a single bet – it’s 4 bets on 3 lines, all on 1 slip.

What does that mean?

Simply put, you’re making 3 double bets and 1 treble bet – all on the same three lines. If we were to make a trixie bet on Seattle, Tampa Bay, and Baltimore using the point spread and odds from above, our bet could be broken down like this:

First Double Bet

Teams (selection in bold)Point spreadOdds
L.A Rams @ Seattle-3.5-110
Tampa Bay @ Washington-8-110

Second Double Bet

Teams (selection in bold)Point spreadOdds
L.A Rams @ Seattle-3.5-110
Baltimore @ Tennessee-3.5-110

Third Double Bet

Teams (selection in bold)Point spreadOdds
Tampa Bay @ Washington-8-110
Baltimore @ Tennessee-3.5-110

Treble Bet

Teams (selection in bold)Point spreadOdds
L.A Rams @ Seattle-3.5-110
Tampa Bay @ Washington-8-110
Baltimore @ Tennessee-3.5-110

Instead of having to place all those bets, however, you can simply ask for a trixie on the three lines, and you’ll get everything on one bet slip. Simple!

How do you win a trixie bet?

Trixie bets are 4 bets on one slip – that means if you win any of the bets, you’ll win some money on the trixie bet. Whether or not the amount you win will be more than you spent on the bet depends on a variety of factors, but if any two lines wins on a trixie you’ll generally make a profit.

It also means that if only a single line wins, you lose the whole trixie bet. Check with bookkeepers about trixies and pushes – in some cases, a push will revert the trixie into two double bets and two single bets.

Figuring out how much you might win in a trixie bet takes a lot of math – or it would, if it weren’t for a variety of handy trixie calculators available online. Many of them have each-way options available – if you’re betting on American league sport lines, like totals or point spread, you don’t have to worry about this (just select “No”).

How much do trixie bets cost?

Trixie bets cost about 4 times as much as you might expect.

Basically, if you ask for a $100 trixie on the lines we mentioned above, you’ve got to put down $400 – $100 for each of the bets you’re placing. Remember, trixie bets are 4 bets on 3 lines, so you have to pay accordingly – $300 for the doubles, and $100 for the treble.

What’s better, a trixie or a patent?

Patent bets are extremely similar to trixie bets – except you’re also making a single bet on each of the lines. In other words, while a trixie bet is 4 bets on 3 lines, a patent bet is 7 bets on 3 lines – 3 singles, 3 doubles, and one treble.

Asking which one is better is a valid question, but it depends very highly on your goals. Professional betting is all about bankroll management – a patent is a more conservative bet than a trixie, which in turn, is a more conservative bet than a treble. The real question is: do you want to be conservative, and if so, is parlay betting your best strategy?

Are trixie bets worth it?

Professional gamblers make use of all kinds of different tools at different times, depending on their goals. For this reason, to simply claim trixie bets aren’t worth it isn’t entirely fair.

That said, be very mindful if you’re making a trixie bet – what are you looking to accomplish?

Let’s say, for example, you’re trixie betting on the NFL lines we’ve been looking at so far. Assuming you’re making a $100 trixie (a $400 bet), you stand to win $1789.18 ($1389.18 in profit). Conversely, if you were to simply bet $400 on a treble, you could win $2783.17 – a much more substantial profit of $2383.17.

The question, then, is why aren’t you making a $400 bet on your treble? If it’s because you’re not confident in your treble, should you be making a treble bet at all? Perhaps instead you’d be better off making 2 double bets at $200 a piece – a lower payout, but without the risk of the line you think is unlikely to be successful.

Kyle will always recommend lines he thinks will be successful, and parlays when it might be a good idea. Trixies can be a fine plan if you want to spread your risk – just make sure you’re thinking carefully about why you want to spread that risk, and what the best way of going about it might be.
